My brother and I decided to go for a walk and ended up at West Row Cafe and Bar in Newburyport MA. One of the advantages of not living far from downtown is being able to get downtown without having to drive plus getting exercise. We were hoping to get some fried dough at an event in downtown but they had left already.
Here is the clam chowder that I ordered. It was really good. As one can see, it is not a lot of soup but it did come with some bacon on top and oyster crackers. It was a good combination.
I liked the shape of the bowl. It is unique. There are times when different is a good thing. It is nice to break from the routine every so often.
I ordered the friend calamari. It came with more than just calamari. It also came with some fried peppers that had some bite to them. It was not just calamari rings but also friend tentacles. It came with a dipping sauce. It was good together but I just wish there was more sauce than what they gave us. I shared it with my brother. I am glad he did since all three items really filled me up.
I like the long narrow plate it was on. It made the amount seem bigger but not huge.
One thing I have a problem with some restaurants is having appetizers that are as big as the main entree. I think it should 'whet the appetite' and not fill one up before the main entree. I am glad it was not something I could accuse this place of.
My brother got the West Row burger. I had it before; if I recall correctly (I had been to this cafe before and enjoyed it then too). He really liked the burger but thought the fries was okay. It was a nice size burger.
I had ordered the crab cake BLT. It was really good. One can see the bacon, lettuce and tomato that was in it. The sauce was really good. Parts of the sandwich fell out but it was quickly consumed.
The fries was okay but not really great. I dipped mine in the ketchup that came with it. There wasn't a lot of ketchup to use with that amount of fries. I sometimes like to eat my fries with mayonnaise, or mayonnaise with ketchup, or mayonnaise with both ketchup and mustard; depending on the mood I am in and whether or not I remembered to ask for mayonnaise.
It was thick and not easily eaten but it was worth the effort. My brother had the same problem with his sandwich but he was able to eat his. We both found ways to do so. I just used both hands to pick it up. My brother cut up his sandwiches into easier to handle sizes.
Here is a picture of the lunch menu. It is simple which makes it easier to read. It was attached to a hard board so it didn't flex too much. It wasn't huge so it did not take up too much space on the table. It wasn't cheap but as they say 'you get what you pay for' and we paid and got quality food.
The photos I use to show the food that I ate is usually photos that I took myself; mostly. I occasionally use photos from the internet but rarely do this ; usually when I forget to take a photo of the food I ate but wanted to show something.
This is me, Tom.
Here is my brother Jerry. We were at the Black Cow when I took this photo.
